Fate and Fortune

Small Assemblages and Poems

At first, the sudden leap from the botanical drawings I have been producing for years to these gothic, three-dimensional collages felt abrupt. A departure. But the more of them I did, the more familiar the arcs between them and the resonances they produce began to feel. While the drawings depicted the natural world it was personalized with elements of a universal and personal mythology.

Growing up a girl named Virginia, in Virginia, during the height of the statewide “Virginia is for Lovers” campaign led to the evolution of my name–to Ginny and then finally to Jenny. Even people close to me have no idea my name is Virginia. And it ensured that sexuality played a major role in the construction of my personal mythology. Eggs, for example, are featured prominently (odd that I married a man named Eggleston), as are various iterations of Annunciation imagery–God’s angel descending upon the Virgin Mary prior announcing conception of Christ.

The other pillar of my personal mythology is dyslexia. Mislabeled as “lazy”, I pretty much have always existed in a state of semi-disorientation–numbers and letters floating around in my field of vision. Like magic! Some of the pieces deal directly with learning and education, and, in general, text is an important element of nearly every piece, both in the form of fortunes and in the form of poetry.  The poems act more like traditional object labels for these pieces. The magical element of dyslexia surfaces via imagery evoking the carnival or circus or fortune telling–all socially acceptable realms of deception…like art!

Jenny Eggleston is a visual artist, poet and teacher. The mastery from her classical training as a nature illustrator is evident in the delicate and detailed execution of her surrealistic compositions.  She uses organic images found in nature including rocks, clouds, eggs, figs, flowers, etc., to create figurative mindscapes that are emotive, sensual, disturbing, and beautiful.  She often interweaves her drawings with poetry, moving smoothly from one creative expression to another to help the viewer both see and feel her intent.

Accomplished in many different media, Jenny has devoted the last five years primarily to graphite drawing.

Jenny Eggleston is the owner and director of “Egg in Nest Art Studio”, a private art studio providing instruction in drawing, painting and art appreciation.
